Nerac Sweeps Podium

Nerac Pro Cycling sent a full squad to the traditional “official” season opener in New England the Michael Schott Memorial Circuit Race. The course consists of a 2.2 mile circuit raced around beautiful Marblehead neck. With its million dollar homes and sweeping views of the Atlantic, this is a unique venue for a race. The riders were fortunate and the weather was perfect.  Sunny skies temps in the 50s light ocean breeze.

The course features a short climb before a quick descent to the finish line. This is followed by a dip, then achris-jones-web.jpg small rise and a right turn into the backstretch, which is wide open and ascends slightly. After cresting a small rise, there is a fast S-turn which leads down to a flat section before a sharp right U-turn leads back into the climb to the finish. Although not overly selective, the little climb and the traditional winds take their toll on the field. The goal of the day was to place two riders in the top three.  We were hoping for a break with good numbers and at least one of our two main sprinters in it.  We also knew that we were going to be the marked team.  Sending a full team to a race like this puts a lot of pressure on us to succeed and a lot of determination from the other elite teams not to allow us to control the race.     The boys were attentive from the start following all dangerous moves and making sure we only worked with the correct combination.  This style of racing continued for the first half of the race until the field was getting a little tired from all the attacks.  It was at that point when a group of 15 riders were able to roll off the front.  We had three riders in the move with one of our sprinters David Wiswell.  This was a good move for us and our riders worked to help keep the break off the front.  The breakaway gained about 30 seconds on the field going into 2 laps to go.  That is when the breakaway started attacking eachother and with one lap to go Chris Jones countered an attack and had 10 seconds on the break.  Chis rode a gutsy final lap to stay away.  Rolling in for second place was Alec Donahue and then taking the field sprint for third was David Wiswell.  Nerac went 1-2-3 on the day.  What a way to start the New England season.  team-photo-web.jpg Next week the team heads down to the US Open Cycling Championships in Richmond, Virginia.  You can all watch the race on NBC at 2:00pm on Saturday.  Wish us luck!
